The Survivor

The Survivor (HBO Max) is about Harry Haft, a real-life survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp; a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps, operated by Nazi Germany, in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust. In Auschwitz, Haft (Ben Foster) along with his fellow prisoners, was forced to participate in a dehumanizing gladiatorial boxing spectacle.

The Survivor, also chronicles Harry Haft’s boxing career and personal life in the United States. Both of which were tortured by his PTSD and guilt from his Auschwitz survivorship. The story is ultimately about his healing process.

Ben Foster is in acting zenith. His performance as Harry Haft is incredible; the physical transformation, the accent. I was totally amazed from start to finish. The music by Hans Zimmer is minimally cut into the film, but the full soundtrack is excellent.

How to play The Survivor | fingerstyle guitar

The full Hans Zimmer template (of restraint) is on display here. He’s the master of one single chord progression, with one single melody. If you have a good thing, keep doing it, let it repeat.

This arrangement is based from the themes: Harry Haft and Walk to the Ring. The chord shapes are relatively easy to play for beginner guitarists. However, I’ve added some trills to make things snappy for intermediate guitar players as well.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

The guitar tab for this piece is beautifully written across 3 pages. My order of play looks like this, in accordance with the guitar tab:

Verse 1, Verse 2, Chorus

Verse 3, Chorus, Verse 4 (End)

**Hans Zimmer: The Survivor | fingerstyle guitar

I’m playing this piece ‘one whole step down’. My tuning looks like this, from low to high: D G C F A D. However, you can play this in standard tuning as well. It sounds just fine.
