Smokestack Twins

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the horror film Sinners unfolds in the Jim Crow-era Mississippi Delta in 1932. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles (as twin brothers) who return to their hometown to start again, only to be confronted by a supernatural evil. The music is by Swedish composer, Ludwig Göransson who also serves as an executive producer for the film.

At the time of this writing, Göransson is only 40 and has already won 2 Academy Awards for Black Panther and Oppenheimer. I would say he’s most famous for Oppenheimer, specifically the piece, Can You Hear the Music. Ludwig is actually a guitarist by trade, and that is expressed in the roots music of Sinners. Here’s an old post of him playing guitar, he’s excellent.

Smokestack Twins is the central theme of Sinners. It was a great opportunity to transcribe something Bluesy and old-timey. The guitar parts in the original piece were recorded with a 1932 Dobro Resonator guitar, tuned to Open D.

How to play Smokestack Twins | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for this piece is beautifully written across 3 pages. I recommend this arrangement for intermediate guitar players an up. Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

You play the guitar tab straight through, taking care to repeat the sections within the ||: repeat brackets :||

At 0:38 of the video, you’ll notice a DDU underneath the guitar tab during the main riff of the piece. This indicates that I’m using my thumb to strum, Down, Down, Up.
