Gustavo Santaolalla

I, in general, like not to have too much music in the movies. I like the music to become relevant at certain points. When you have a really dramatic scene or when something is really happening on the screen, why would you put some music to it? I mean, you can turn something dramatic into something melodramatic very easily. – Gustavo Santaolalla, On Being with Krista Tippett

Special thanks to one of my subscribers, Alex (from Russia) for alerting me to this. I had no idea Naughty Dog was revealing some of Gustavo Santaolalla’s themes already — as I believe The Last Of Us 2 Part II is a long way from being released yet.

I wonder how this theme will be used in the game? I can’t imagine them breaking away from the first game’s iconic central theme — to create another.

I’m not a gamer, but I am Gustavo Santaolalla’s biggest fan (I think I can say that after posting 60+ arrangements and tabs)! This is an exceptional piece of music, and it’s a privilege to play this Santaolalla’s work every single time.

If you’re a musician, and you write your own stuff, take note of the abrupt ending. Gustavo Santaolalla always throws in something out of left field. Santaolalla’s habit of the unexpected, is what drew me to his music years ago.

I’ve posted the entire, original The Last Of Us score. Everything is available with guitar tabs.

If interested, my guitar for this recording is a small Cordoba Dolce, with a G7th capo. You can find all of my gear here.

How to play The Last of Us Part II theme for guitar

As of this writing, we’re not sure how the theme in the video above will be used in The Last Of Us Part II. It could be just a menu theme, or background music. Even still, it’s masterful work.

I like that Gustavo Santaolalla never tried to play something eerie or spooky for The Last of US. He treated it more like a dramatic movie. By listening to music, you’d never know that zombies were in the game.

The guitar tab is two pages long, and written beautifully. The only repeat is in the very beginning — where I doubled down on the intro to elongate the song by a measure.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

The Last of Us Part II is played in standard tuning with a capo on the 3rd fret.
