The Last of Us Part 2

To introduce The Last of Us Part 2 at the E3 gaming convention, Gustavo Santaolalla performed this song from soundtrack. It was a great performance, and we can figure that it must be the new title theme for The Last of Us 2.

He’s playing some type of guitar-banjo (played as an actual 6 string guitar). We can also see the elements of his guitar style that are uniquely, Santaolalla: a slow, almost bluesy approach — punctuated with quick trills, and off kilter notes. His tempo oscillates from relaxed to agile, then back again.

Whether it’s Brokeback Mountain, Babel, or The Last of Us. Gustavo Santaolalla’s film music is nationally ambiguous. It’s music of the world. Perfect for The Last of Us where normal borders no longer exist.

Gear Used

For The Last of Us 2 (E3) theme, I used my Cordoba GK Studio guitar. I’m experimenting with new strings as well, Martin Magnifico M265. I must say, they’re very close to the feel of Savarez Red Card 520R (my usual string). You can find a current list of my gear here.

The Last of Us 2 theme is relatively easy, but best suited to intermediate guitar players and up. The guitar tab is beautifully written across three pages, and played straight through.
