The Last of Us II

To introduce The Last of Us Part II at the 2018 E3 gaming convention, Gustavo Santaolalla performed the new central theme from soundtrack. It was a great performance. At the time, the piece was called The Last of Us (Cycles). Now that the game and soundtrack have been launched, we know it’s simply titled, The Last of Us Part II.

He’s playing some type of guitar-banjo (played as an actual 6 string guitar). We can also see the elements of his guitar style that are uniquely, Santaolalla: a slow, almost bluesy approach — punctuated with quick trills, and off kilter notes. His tempo oscillates from relaxed to agile, then back again.

Whether it’s Brokeback Mountain, Babel, or The Last of Us. Gustavo Santaolalla’s film music is nationally ambiguous. It’s music of the world. Perfect for The Last of Us where normal borders no longer exist.
