“Gabriel’s Oboe” is the title theme for the 1986 film The Mission. The piece was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and is widely considered to be one of his greatest musical achievements. The Mission is a period drama about the experience of a Jesuit priest, and a reformed slave trader, as the men build a Mission within the Guarani lands of 18th-century South America.

Although the film stars, Jeremey Irons, and Robert de Niro — it’s also one of Liam Neeson’s early films at the age of 34. He would later play a Jesuit missionary priest in Martin Scorsese’s Silence (2016) — one of my most favorite films.
