The American

The American is a 2010 thriller film directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney. The screenplay is an adaptation of the 1990 novel, A Very Private Gentleman, by Martin Booth.

The American is my favorite movie of all time. Director Anton Corbijn, is a world renowned photographer; every frame of the movie is beautifully shot with gorgeous, sweeping Italian landscapes and architecture. You can luxuriate in the visuals of the film.

The movie plays out like a quiet ASMR meditation: as Jack, an isolated and paranoid hitman, builds a gun for an employer that he suspects is trying to kill him.

Additionally, The American has two of the hottest actresses you will ever see on screen: Thekla Reuten and Violante Placido. Excruciatingly hot, if such a characterization could exist.

The music by Herbert Gronemeyer is also my favorite score (next to Gustavo Santaolalla’s Brokeback Mountain score). Much like the movie itself, the music splits the difference between spy thriller and an Ennio Morricone spaghetti western.

What I’ve arranged in the video above is the actual guitar end credits theme, paired with the main title theme. Specifically when Jack’s car leaves ‘The Tunnel’ — as the song is otherwise known.

Gear Used

For The American, I used my Cordoba GK Studio. Classical guitars can be finicky with tuning and intonation, but the GK Studio is dynamically perfect. The neck is thin and comfortable and the string action is low like an electric guitar. You can find all of my gear here.

The American closing theme: End Credits (with my addition of the Main Title theme) is best suited for intermediate guitar players and up. As far as a classical guitar piece goes, this would be on the doable and easy side. However casual guitar players and beginners might have some trouble.

The guitar tab for The American is three pages long and played straight through without repeats. I’ve sectioned off the guitar tab with to make it easier to read — and show a clear change of chord shape.

Enjoy. This is one of all time favorite pieces to play. The guitar tab is available below:
