The Ludlows

Legends of the Fall (1994) is an epic American historical drama, directed by Edward Zwick and starring Brad Pitt. The film is about three brothers and their father living on the plains of Montana in the early 20th century and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war, and love.

Legends of the Fall is a modern classic, and the music by James Horner perfectly fits the Ludlow’s Montana homestead. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards and jettisoned Brad Pitt to super-stardom.

The Ludlows is the central theme of Legends of the Fall. The late composer, James Horner had such a knack for the Celtic/Americana sound. The Ludlows are a Cornish immigrant family, and James Horner perfectly threads late  Cornwall with early Montana.

How to play The Ludlows | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for this arrangement is beautifully written across two pages. I would characterize this as easy to play, due to the slow speed and basic chord shapes.

The Ludlows is essentially one long passage played twice through. Although the original is piano and orchestration, I just imagined what composer Gustavo Santaolalla might play over this piece. His iconic work on Brokeback Mountain laid the foundation for an epic score on a single guitar.
