The Ludlows

Legends of the Fall (1994) is a sweeping epic that chronicles the lives of the Ludlow family in early 20th century Montana. Colonel William Ludlow, a disillusioned former U.S. Army officer, has retreated to the wilderness with his three sons: Alfred, the responsible eldest; Tristan, the wild and adventurous middle son; and Samuel, the idealistic youngest.

Their lives are forever changed when Samuel brings home his fiancée, Susannah. Tragedy strikes when Samuel is killed in World War I, leaving Susannah to grapple with her grief and a growing attraction to both Tristan and Alfred. Set against the backdrop of a changing America, “Legends of the Fall” is a tale of passion, betrayal, and the enduring familial bonds.

The film was nominated for three Academy Awards and jettisoned Brad Pitt to super-stardom. Other than a Taylor Sheridan epic like 1921 — Legends of the Fall is one of those movies that’s just not made anymore.

The music by James Horner perfectly fits the Ludlow’s Montana homestead. “The Ludlows” is the central theme of Legends of the Fall. The late composer, James Horner had such a knack for the Celtic/Americana sound. The Ludlows are actually a Cornish immigrant family, and (musically speaking) James Horner perfectly threads late  Cornwall with early Montana.

How to play The Ludlows | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for this arrangement is beautifully written across 2 pages. I would characterize this as easy to play, due to the slow speed and basic chord shapes.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

The Ludlows is essentially one long passage played twice through.
