Lady Bird
The Lady Bird soundtrack is from multi-instrumentalist composer Jon Brion. Brion’s niche is in creating “unsentimental” scores that fit hand in glove with indie drama/comedies. The music bounces along — like a Beatles song without vocals — never interfering with the scene.
Contrast this with Gustavo Santaolalla who specialty is drama. Brokeback Mountain would be the ultimate sentimentality in film score.
Having also scored Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia, one would think Jon Brion’s light touch would be perfect for an Alexander Payne film (Sideways, The Descendents).
The identical themes, Consolation and Reconcile, resonated with me because they’re actually approaching some level of sentimentality in Lady Bird. This works with my guitar style and musicality.
