The Hateful Eight: Ennio Morricone’s L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock (for guitar)

the hateful eight

I’ve been eagerly anticipating Ennio Morricone’s score for The Hateful Eight: the new film by Quentin Tarantino. The title theme, L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock was a chance to do something totally different from my normal guitar style on this blog.

L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock is a collection of odd notes that produces a sinister sounding theme. It’s campy, as an Ennio Morricone theme done in 2015 would be. When translated to guitar, it comes off like a bizarre finger exercise.

I’m a big fan of Ennio Morricone, and I’ve done a few of his pieces for this blog: Most notably, The Ecstasy of Gold. This has been done a million times by guitar players on YouTube, and I believe that my version exceptional — in that I was able to combine all the melodic and rhythmic elements at once.

Clint Eastwood curated Ennio Morricone’s The Funeral for the final scene of American Sniper. This song is a beautiful, heart-rending tribute, and my minimalist guitar version captures the poignant end of American Sniper.

Also, while a few years old, I’ve done most of the songs from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Django features song from Ennio Morricone.

(Note:  L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock is my premium material.)

You’ll have to excuse the brevity of my recent posts. I used to write thoughtful little articles in addition to the songs I transcribe. My 9 month old son is crawling and climbing — so my wife and I are all hands on deck. I’m forced to work in the early morning hours (6:00 am) or late at night to complete material for this blog.`

Maybe it’s my exhaustion, but I haven’t thought of anything philosophical — other than practicing stoicism while a baby is screaming!

L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock is totally weird to play. The song really does seem like a finger exercise. At any given time you’ll be doing odd sequences with your fretting hand. I recommend this song for intermediate guitar players and up.

The guitar tab is only two pages long, and my order of play looks like this, in accordance with the tab: Intro, Main, #1 — Main #2. I’m palm muting to the Low E string nearly the whole time. If I play a note eight times I simply indicate that in the guitar tab with a (……..) symbol. It’s pretty straightforward. You would get it, even without my explaining it.

Good luck! The guitar tab is available below:

L’Ultima Diligenza di Red Rock is tuned way down to C. You could just as easily play it in standard but if you want to go as low as me — your tuning is as follows from low to high: C F A# D# G C. Or, depending on your tuner, it will look like this: C F Bb Eb G C.

I use special super high tension strings for my lower tuned guitar. With those strings, the guitar performance normally at low and alternate tunings. It’s actually very fun. You can find a list of all of my gear here.
