Summer Storm

The Glass Castle (the book and movie) recount the unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing of Jeannette Walls and her siblings had at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents. The title refers to her father’s long held intention of building his dream house, ‘a glass castle’.

While I never saw the movie or read the book — the critic and public reviews are split down the middle. The intensity belonging to the 50% of critics and people who deeply loved the movie.

This piece of music was a tip from one of my listeners, James. I liked the (big fat Americana) acoustic guitar riff. Being a vocal song, I paired Summer Storm down into a quick instrumental and added my own ending.

How to play Summer Storm by Joel P West

The guitar tab for Summer Storm is two pages long and beautifully written. This song is essentially one long passage (verse) played over and over. In the case if this instrumental, I played through the verse three times. The second verse is slightly shorter — which is indicated in the guitar tab.

You’ll notice a D (down) and a U (up) below the guitar tab in some sections. Joel P West is doing a fairly quick down/up stroke on those notes. You don’t to be too exact, a simple down/up stroke of the open strings will suffice. My order of play, in accordance with the guitar tab goes like this: Intro, Verse 3x, End.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Summer Storm is played in an open D tuning: D A D F# A D. You’ll then use a capo on the 2nd fret (effectively making it Open E).
