My 2019 Oscar prediction

If you’re mildly interested in the Oscars — Best Score is only a competition between: If Beale Street Could Talk (Nicholas Britell) and Isle of Dogs (Alexandre Desplat). Desplat won last year for, The Shape of Water, and is doing the best work of his career. Gustavo Santaolalla won back to back Oscars in 2006/2007 so there’s precedent.

This is super tough, but I have to go with Alexandre Desplat again for, Isle of Dogs. The music and film are inextricably linked.

While the cream does rise to the top (Britell and Desplat are the two of the best) I have no idea how they arrived at the other nominees: Black Panther, Mary Poppins, and BlacKkKlansman. Fine scores but not Academy Level.

First Man (Justin Hurwitz) and Suspiria (Thom Yorke) are two of the best film scores in history and didn’t even make the list.

Gear used

For this arrangement, I used my Cordoba C7 Cedar. It’s a deep and dark sounding guitar. You can find a list of all of my gear recommendations here.

How to play If Beale Street Could Talk for classical guitar

(Note: This is my premium material. Click here to be updated on all of my latest guitar tabs.)

I based this guitar arrangement on the central themes: Agape and Eden (Harlem) from the excellent score by Nicholas Britell.

It’s relatively easy to play, and the guitar tab is only one page long. In accordance with the guitar tab, you’ll play the main section in the [repeat brackets] twice — then the End section.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

If Beale Street Could Talk is played one whole step down. Your tuning is D G C F A D.
