Gustavo Santaolalla: Lago Frías (and The Motorcycle Diaries Medley) + TAB

My rock band, New Invisible Joy

I played bass professionally in a band called New Invisible Joy 1998-2008. During that time we toured extensively, played major label showcases, recorded with major label producers, and played with major label acts like: John Mayer, The Killers, Maroon 5, and so on. We were never able to make the leap to landing a long term record deal and disbanded in 2008 to focus on our jobs and families.

We reunited July 28th to headline one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in Pittsburgh (our home town). The crowd was enormous, and it seems like we might (tentatively) record some music and play more. You can see photos from the gig on our Facebook page, or my Instagram.

Additionally, you can find my band, New Invisible Joy on Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever you get your music.

My film score, Broken Noons

Here is the trailer for Broken Noons, a short film by Mexican director, Guillermo L. Vazquez. I wrote and recorded the score.

Guillermo shot the film in Spain with Spanish actress Josi Lage. In the trailer, you’ll hear my guitar line fade into a song by French singer-songwriter Octavie Ploye. It’s my great privilege to be a part of this international team — all bringing this short-film to life.

Like me, Guillermo is also a big fan of Gustavo Santaolalla’s music. He gave me some great queues — and everything I did seemed to work perfectly.

We begin at the film festivals this fall. To follow the progress of our short film, please like the Broken Noons Facebook page.

Recently, it has occured to me create things (and musical derivatives) that I want to hear. Lago Frias has always been one of my favorite guitar riffs, but it’s only a riff.

With this arrangement, I’ve created a ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ medley beginning with Lago Frias and continuing with: Partida del Leprosario, La Partida, and Leyendo en el Hospital. All from Gustavo Santaolalla’s venerable Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack.

Gear used

For Lago Frias, I used my Cordoba C7 Cedar top. It’s a deep and boomy guitar that I use specifically for low and alternate tuning. You can find a current list of my gear here.

I would characterize Lago Frias as relatively easy to play — as none of the chord shapes are difficult. However, the guitar tab is three pages long, and some beginners might be a bit overwhelmed.

As mentioned, the guitar tab is beautifully written across three pages. You play straight though until page three where you’ll see |: repeat brackets :|. Repeat those sections twice a each as indicated in the guitar tab.

I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed creating it. The guitar tab is available below:
