Widow’s Bay
[no spoilers]
I am easily bored. It’s a curse. If something doesn’t grab me within the first few minutes, I’m already reaching for my phone. The only reason I sit through anything at all is because my wife — blessed with an almost supernatural ability to focus — insists that “we watch shows together.”
Widow’s Bay (Apple TV) is the first show in a long time — maybe since The Last of Us Season 1 — where I genuinely cannot look away. The casting is exceptional. The main character, Tom Loftis, is a perpetually exasperated, high-strung mayor forced to govern the superstitious and wonderfully off-beat residents of a cursed New England island. It’s funny and genuinely spooky — think M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, but set against the supernatural landscape of a Stephen King novel.
The score is by composer David Fleming, who recently scored the new Superman film and collaborated with Gustavo Santaolalla on The Last of Us Season 2. The Widow’s Bay soundtrack has a distinct “New England Gothic” feel — sparse, violin-driven ensembles with ghostly, ethereal voices woven throughout.
The Stone Room was the end credits piece for Episode 2. It has a delicate little classical guitar motif that lends itself perfectly to a short arrangement — and it’s very beginner-friendly.
