Remember
28 Years Later is a long way off from the 2002 original. Being in my late 40s, I still fondly remember Danny Boyle’s gritty, grainy direction and how he completely rebooted the zombie genre. 28 Days Later was also, of course, the world’s introduction to Cillian Murphy.
It occurs to me that younger viewers who haven’t seen the first two films might be puzzled by these latest iterations. To truly get a feel for this post-infection world, you must watch 28 Days Later at a minimum. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, as well; it was the first movie that truly horrified me, leaving me filled with dread long after I left the theater.
With 28 Years Later, I was surprised by the sheer heart of the story. While I loved how Boyle updated the genetic evolution of the infected, the sentimental journey of the adolescent boy and his ill mother was unexpected. As a father to a son of a similar age, this thread really resonated with me—to the point where the infected became merely a backdrop to their story.
The soundtrack by Young Fathers was also incredibly forward-thinking. The use of lyrics and vocal dubs was a complete curveball that made an already exciting movie even more delightful. That is the genius of Danny Boyle: he knows how to hook your subconscious with something slightly off-kilter. There is one track called “Boots” that samples a phrase from an old film: “Boots, boots, moving up and down again.” It was so weird and oddly placed that it immediately grabbed my attention.
If you’ve seen the film, the song “Remember” is by far the most beautiful piece from the most beautiful scene in the movie. During its crescendo, I found myself getting a little teary-eyed. I looked over at my wife, and she was just wrecked—sobbing inconsolably.
