I Love You Too Much

The Book of Life (2014) is a visually stunning tribute to Mexican culture and the traditions of Día de los Muertos. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, the film uses a striking “wooden doll” animation style, giving the characters the charm of handcrafted folk-art puppets.

The soundtrack is anchored by my favorite composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, and features a brilliant blend of original pieces and Latin-inspired covers of pop hits like Radiohead’s “Creep” and Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait.” However, the heart of the film is the original theme, “I Love You Too Much.”

I’ve wanted to tackle a true fingerstyle version of this song for years—one where the vocal melody is “ghosted” directly into the chord progression. While the original key requires a capo on the 5th fret (a position Santaolalla frequently uses to mimic the bright, sharp tone of a ronroco), I found that placement a bit too cramped for the song’s intricacies. I eventually moved the capo down to the 3rd fret, giving the arrangement more room to breathe while maintaining its signature character.
