The Final Mission

The main reason I love Jared Michael Fry’s Heart of the Beast soundtrack is that it’s thematic and sentimental. It’s OK, the composer can tell you how to feel, just like John Williams’s enduring film scores do.

To me, modern soundtracks tend to follow two trends:

  1. No sentimentality. The music runs alongside the film like an additional character. Think Ludwig Göransson’s work on Oppenheimer and The Odyssey. Incredible music, but Göransson isn’t trying to make you cry.
  2. Super avant-garde. Distorted techno, overt jazz, or beating on sawblades with No. 2 pencils.
