Embers

I originally wrote this piece for a foreign language film titled Broken Noons, directed by Guillermo Vasquez and shot in Spain. I’ve always been proud of the work I did for that project, so I’ve recently been re-recording and releasing those tracks.

“Embers” is a meditation on the phrase “this too shall pass.” It reflects the idea that everything we experience—good or bad—is like the trail of a momentary ember: sparking for a second, then disappearing into the evening air.

It’s also a reminder that, because life is fleeting, we should focus on work that speaks to our souls. In that spirit, I found a simple New Year exercise by photographer and entrepreneur, Chase Jarvis, that I wanted to share:

Prepare: Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the center.

Categorize: At the top of the first column, write WINS. At the top of the second, write LOSSES.

Reflect: Free-associate and write down as many wins and losses as possible from the previous year. Ask yourself: What made you more money? What made you happier? What deepened your relationships with the people who matter most? What made you healthier?

Execute: The goal for the coming year is to do MORE of what is in the WIN column, and far less—if any—of what is in the Losses column.

Hope that helps!

How to Play “Embers” | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for this piece is beautifully laid out across 4 pages. I recommend this song for beginners and up, as the chord shapes are very accessible and easy to play. To perform the piece as heard, simply play through the tab twice.

This piece is played in standard tuning with a capo on the 2nd fret.
