Brokeback Mountain

Gustavo Santaolalla’s score for Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece of cinematic music. It perfectly complements the film’s poignant and tragic love story. By using sparse, two-note intervals, Santaolalla lets the guitar’s resonance to all of the work — capturing the isolation, and longing experienced by the two protagonists. The score’s iconic theme “The Wings” has become a timeless piece, solidifying Gustavo Santaolalla as one of the most talented and versatile film composers of our time.

The theme, “Brokeback Mountain 1” is my favorite piece of music period. The song plays out like a circular journey, resolving with the beginning. The minimalism informs all of my guitar playing, and serves as the grounding principle for my musicality; less is more.
