I wrote this song while thinking about my son (who’s 3 at the moment). I get to work early each morning on my YouTube channel and blog, so I’ll have enough time to play with him for a few hours before I head off to work again. [I teach my guitar students in the afternoon.]
Matthew and I go to playgrounds, guitar stores, coffee shops, and run errands. Every ordinary task is an adventure when I’m with him.
The song title comes from this quote:
“Ah, what happiness it is to be with people who are all happy, to press hands, press cheeks, smile into eyes.”
― Katherine Mansfield

How to play Smile Into Eyes, by Evan Handyside
Smile Into Eyes is influenced by the work of composer Rob Simonsen. While I tend to drift towards deeply sentimental music (Santaolalla-ish) — Simonsen’s music stays light and on the surface. It’s a completely different skill set that I intend to explore further in my own writing.
Smile Into Eyes is relatively easy to play, but I recommend it mostly for intermediate guitar players. You’ll have to be fairley agile, and there’s a slightly stretched out position in the chorus section.
The guitar tab is beautifully written across two pages. My order of play, in accordance with the guitar tab, goes like this: Verse 1, Pre Chorus, Chorus 1x (stop at |) — Verse 2, Pre Chorus, Chorus 2x.
Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:
Smile Into Eyes is played in standard tuning.
