ALIEN EARTH

Alien Earth is an incredible series on FX. I didn’t have high hopes — given all the misses with the franchise. However, Noah Hawley (Fargo) has the created a masterpiece. [No spoilers]

Episode 1 is a little wonky, but every episode afterward is glorious. If you haven’t seen the show yet, here’s a little primer:

The television series Alien: Earth is a prequel to the 1979 film Alien. It is set in the year 2120, which is just two years before the events of the original Alien movie, which takes place in 2122. The series explores a Xenomorph crash-landing on Earth and the early involvement of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation with the creature.

At this point, Weyland and Yutani are two separate (multifaceted) corporations battling for supremacy on Earth. Think of titans of industry like Space X and Blue Origin duking it out. The newcomer Weyland is experimenting with different types of beings:

1. Synthetics — like we’re used to seeing in the Alien franchise; Ash, Bishop, and David.

2. Hybrids — which are synthetics downloaded with human consciousness. This would be “Wendy”.

The much older and established company, Yutani is experimenting with Cyborgs which are mechanically enhanced humans — like a human version of the T-1000 from Terminator. Additionally, Yutani is using Deep Space vessels to gather Alien lifeforms from distant planets for research and development.

Episode 5 of this series is legitimately a stand-alone Alien film. You have to see it.

The music from the series is by composer, Jeff Russo who began his career as the guitarist and founding member of Tonic. If you’re anywhere near my age, you’ll remember their 90’s hit “If You Could Only See”. Jeff nails the tenor of the 1979 film with wonderment of Jerry Goldsmith’s original score.

My favorite theme, Wendy (Quintet) , is the central theme of Alien Earth and also the central character.
