The Last of Us Part II

Gustavo Santaolalla’s score for “The Last of Us Part II” deepens the game’s harrowing, emotional landscape. The title theme is played on some type of guitar-banjo (played as an actual 6 string guitar). We can also see elements of his guitar style, that are uniquely “Santaolalla”; a slow, almost bluesy approach — punctuated with quick trills, and off kilter notes. His tempo oscillates from relaxed to agile, then back again.

Gustavo Santaolalla’s soundtracks are World Music in the truest sense. The music combines Blues, Spanish, and Middle Eastern melodies all at once. It’s perfect for The Last of Us, where normal borders no longer exist.

I performed this piece years ago for the Grecian short film, “A Last of Us Story: Anna”. This is an incredible foreign-language production (directed by Sakis Karpas) that will absolutely thrill fans of the game and the HBO series.
