The Brutalist
The Brutalist is a film is about a Hungarian-Jewish architect named László Tóth. Having just survived the horrors of the Holocaust, László seeks refuge and a fresh start in the United States. Being separated from his wife during the war — he carries the hope of reuniting his family.
László’s architectural talent catches the eye of a wealthy industrialist who commissions him to design a grand modernist monument. While the commission offers László the chance at achieving the American Dream — he must navigate the dark influence of his powerful industrialist patron.
The music from The Brutalist is from visual artist and composer, Daniel Blumberg. While score is unconventional, there’s a very familiar sounding 4 note motif played in various forms through the soundtrack: E F G C. This hook gives the soundtrack a grandiosity that matches the film.
The starting point for my arrangement of this theme, was a minimalist piano variant from the soundtrack entitled, “Library”. Big chunks of that piece didn’t translate well to a solo fingerstyle arrangement, so did my own thing on the A Minor turn-around.
