Of the undiscovered country

“Hamnet” is a historical drama based on Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling 2020 novel. The film tells the profound story of love and loss between William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes Hathaway (historically known as Anne Hathaway, but not the modern actress).

The central tragedy is the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, and how this grief is believed to have inspired Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

The film features a soundtrack by one of the greatest modern composers, Max Richter. I believe his piece “Of the undiscovered country” is his most emotive work since “On the Nature of Daylight” (2004). The latter, an enduring favorite, has been featured in several major productions, including Shutter Island, Arrival, and HBO’s The Last of Us.
