Left Behind (The Journey)

I’ve always loved this piece, originally titled “Left Behind (Together)” from The Last of Us Vol. 2 — which is actually the soundtrack for the Left Behind DLC  (the first game’s expansion).

I’m not a gamer, and in case you’re not either: DLC stands for “downloadable content” — it’s additional content released for a video game after the main game ships, typically purchased and downloaded separately. It can be extra story chapters, new characters, maps, or items.

The Last of Us: Left Behind was a standalone story expansion following Ellie before the events of the main game. It was released in 2014 with an entirely new soundtrack from Gustavo Santaolalla, entitled The Last of Us Vol. 2.

As a massive Santaolalla fan, getting a whole new soundtrack just 8 months after the original game’s release was a total treat.

The Last of Us HBO series covered both the original and expansion storylines across Season 1, and the game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, in Season 2 — giving Santaolalla the opportunity to recompose, abbreviate, and augment his original music.

In the case of “Left Behind (The Journey)”, he expanded the piece with a gorgeous new bridge section.
