The Kiss

The Kiss is the up-tempo, and secondary cue from The Last of the Mohicans. Another (nearly identical) version of this cue is entitled Promentory. Both songs are actually a Celtic violin motif entitled “The Gael” by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean.

The Kiss can be considered a companion piece to the Main Title Theme which I’ve also performed on this blog. Within that post, I’ve written about the chaotic music production and multiple composers used for The Last of the Mohicans.

This piece works as an étude: a short composition built on a technical motive — but also played for its artistic value. We could also call it “a musical exercise”. I’ve compiled a few of these études in my 2 Minute Classical Guitar Archive. I really love these cues because — no matter how difficult they are — there’s no time investment. Everything is under 2 minutes!

How to play The Kiss | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for The Kiss, is beautifully written across 2 pages. I recommend this piece for intermediate guitar players and up. Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

On page #1 of the guitar tab, you’ll notice the repeat symbols on the first two stanzas. You’ll play each of those two times. Page #1 itself will be played 4 times straight through. Page #2 is simply the very end of the étude.

You’ll notice that I have 2-note intervals on 1st and 2nd strings. Here’s the deal: I use a swiping motion with the middle finger of my fingerstyle hand. While I’m concentrating on just the 1st string, I’m “catching” the 2nd string with my middle finger. That’s usually expressed organically on the pull-offs.

Those are *not meant to be plucked with two fingers; swiping only. To make things easier, just concentrate on playing the notes on the 1st string. If you catch the 2nd string in there sometimes, great!
