Gone Girl

I look forward to the scores by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — as much as I look forward to David Fincher’s movies. At this point: The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl are inextricably linked with their gritty soundtracks.

There’s a few standout tunes from the score of Gone Girl, and Technically, Missing turned out to be a short, but really interesting guitar piece. I think of it as an etude:

a short musical composition, typically for one instrument, designed as an exercise to improve the technique or demonstrate the skill of the player.

Technically, Missing is an opportunity to for beginner and intermediate guitar players practice a driving base-line with your thumb — while simultaneously playing melodic notes with your finger(s).

How to play Trent Reznor’s Technically, Missing: an etude for classical guitar

I’ve drawn up an excellent guitar tab for this song. There’s 16 bass notes per measure which I have divided into quadrants to make it easier to read. The melodic notes are written under their corresponding bass notes. This may sound confusing, but just take a look at the tab — it’s very easy to understand.

The tuning for Technically, Missing is essentially open G — tuned one whole step down. The tuning is as follows from low to high: C F C F A C. This makes it, in effect, an open F tuning. I should also mention that I’m barely touching my right-hand palm against the strings to get a slight muting effect on the bass notes.

If interested, my guitar is a cheap Alvarez AC65 strung with Savarez Yellow card strings. Savarez Red and Yellow card are my favorite strings, and they can make any guitar sound tremendous. The Yellow card strings are an extra high tension so my Alvarez AC65 sound and feels normal at ultra-low tunings. You can find a list of all of my gear here.
