To the Stars
As of this writing, To the Stars, is the first released song from Brad Pitt’s deep space epic, Ad Astra. I think about Pitt’s career often. His IMDb page is ridiculously good. From early in the 90’s his roles where carefully chosen (and he was never overexposed.) Plan B, Pitt’s production company, routinely creates Oscar contenders and winners.
From the outside, Brad Pitt seems iconically cool, casual, and whimsical. However, a closer look reveals an extraordinarily serious artist — and a highly disciplined celebrity, e.g., no social media.
The brilliance of Max Richter is in the melodic chord progression. Meaning, the base chord progression is also the principle melody. With such a strong foundation, Richter writes no other parts — other than a few tiny melodies that sit on top of the progression.
While this is not always Max Richter’s tack, deep space calls for music that is voluminous. Giant looming chords create the depth of space — while tiny melodies are the small shooting objects though the cosmos.
