The Last of the Mohicans

I was reading (author and podcaster) Tim Ferriss’ weekly newsletter called 5 Bullet Friday, where he mentioned that he’s been listening to The Last of the Mohicans score.

I remembered that being an excellent movie, and there’s a few scenes where the music stood out to me when I was kid. I checked it out again and gosh — I forgot how affecting the score is from The Last of the Mohicans.

This happens to be the Main Title theme, but I also plan on doing more from this score. In fact, I’ve been going through the music from the big films of my youth — and I plan on a couple more surprises. So if you’re a Gen X’er like me, stay tuned.

The iTunes bio for The Last of the Mohicans score is hilariously inaccurate. I’m not sure where they got their information, but they state that composer Trevor Jones died midway through the making of The Last of the Mohicans and that composer Randy Edelman had to resume the rest of the scoring duties. Trevor Jones is still alive, well, and scoring movies.

The real story seems to be that The Last of the Mohicans was being cut and recut, down to the wire, against a deadline. Jones had moved on to a new project, so Randy Edelman had create music for a few minor scenes, drawing cues from the original music by Trevor Jones.

How to play The Last of the Mohicans Main Title Theme for classical guitar

This is relatively easy to play. There’s one chord at the end (0:52 of the video) that’s a bit of stretch, but that’s really it. The guitar tab is a single page long, and the theme’s short duration also makes it undaunting to play.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

The Last of the Mohicans Main Title theme is tuned one whole step down. Your tuning is as follows from low to high: D G C F A D.
