stranger things

[Update Oct 2017: Stranger Things 2: opening theme for guitar + TAB. Continue below for the classic main theme.]

I could watch Stranger Things from now until the end of time. I’m 39, so in 1987, I was right around the age the boys in hit Netflix series. I believe Stranger Things is set in 1983.

Aside from the nod to 80’s films like Altered States, Goonies, E.T., and Red Dawn — Stranger Things also acknowledges the movies we watched in the 80’s like JAWS.

Chief Hopper, and Chief Brody are literally driving the same vehicle, with the same hapless deputies. Both unlikely heroes are flawed cigarette smoking, alcoholics, who find purpose in defeating a monster.

Above all, Stranger Things, is a time machine to the simplicity and wonderment of the 1980’s.

Parents are inextricably involved in their children’s lives now. I know, because I teach guitar to dozens of suburban kids in their homes. I’m also guilty as charged. My wife and I are 100% obsessed with every movement our toddler makes.

However, in the 80’s, our parents were mildly involved. It was the culture then. Thier job was food, clothing, boundaries, and then enforcing punishment if the boundaries were crossed.

Whereas today, an 11 year old is looking to his parents for entertainment —  we spent our time as 80’s adolescents escaping home. My buddies and I would jump on our bikes and get as far away from our parents eyes and ears as possible. It’s crazy to think about it now, but during summer, I would leave in the morning, and come back at night time. That’s unheard of now.

How to play the opening the me of Stranger Things for classical guitar

The synth-based opening theme for Stranger Things is composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the Austin-based band S U R V I V E.

The guitar tab is two pages long and very easy to read. I made good use of |: repeat :| signs, as you tend to play the same thing over and over.

The arpeggiated chord shapes are mostly over 4 strings so your fingering will match up exactly from your thumb to your 3rd finger.

Overall, I feel that Stranger Things is easy to play. You’ll have to be efficient at finger picking but the left hand positions are very easy. The guitar tab is available below:

Stranger Things is played inDrop-D tuning. The low E string (6th string) will be tuned down to D. The tuning is as follows from low to high: D A D G B E.
