Sigur Ros

“We probably managed to create the gloomiest version so far. It is maybe not the happiest wedding song, but we think that it fit the scene very well.” – Georg Holm, Sigur Ros

When I search for Intellimusica’s content, I have an idea of what I want to do next but I’m always open to something cooler.

Such is the scenario with The Rains of Castamere as performed by Sigur Ros. This was definitely better than anything I could have imagined otherwise.

The Rains of Castamere is originally written by Ramin Djawadi who also penned the rest of the Game of Thrones score. This song was first introduced in Season 2 and performed by The National.

The Rains of Castamere is now slyly played before the infamous death scenes in Game of Thrones. If you haven’t yet watched Season 3, or episode 2 of Season 4, skip over the next paragraph.

*Warning: Spoilers*
You can hear the minstrels at 0:26 of this video [warning graphic] creepily introduce The Rains of Castamere to kick of the Red Wedding. This far more tame video shows Sigur Ros’ cameo in Game of Thrones performing The Rains of Castamere before a certain someone’s demise.
*Okay, safe now*

I think we can pretty much establish that, when you hear an ominous minstrel playing this fateful song, someone is about to meet their spectacular end.

How to Play Sigur Ros’ The Rains of Castamere for classical guitar

I am totally obsessed with this guitar piece. I love loose, meandering guitar lines. In many ways this reminds of The Last of Us menu theme, which is also one of my favorites.

I’m not going to be humble about this. I knocked it out of the park with this arrangement and transcription. I have been waiting for months for a piece of music like this to inspire me.

Like all inspired music pieces, Castamere came together within 20 minutes, and I was immediately confident that I had something special.

The tab for The Rains of Castamere is written straight through and without many repeats. It’s relatively short — at only a page and 1/2 long. This song is also easy to play.

Hi Igor, looks like an interesting movie. I think my wife would be especially into it. I checked out the soundtrack, nothing jumped out at me for this blog, but it’s still good stuff. Thanks for commenting, Evan
