It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential. Simplicity is the key to brilliance.” – Bruce Lee

With Rain, I employed a similar fingerstyle technique that composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, often uses with an Andean instrument called a ronroco.

I wrote this song over 10 years ago, but recently began playing it again, when I conceived of a way to minimize the song. The original version had WAY too many parts and guitar acrobatics. Not at all indicative of my style now.

[Additionally, I’ve had a couple songs placed in commercials and I’d like to get more of my music placed. If the melody (or guitar playing) is too strong, the music gets in the way of the film.]

Rain was a process of (to quote Bruce Lee) hacking away the unessential. I was left with a perfect song. I just flows seamlessly from beginning to end. The chorus is there but not overpowering. It’s short but feels much longer than 2 minutes.

I had no idea what to name this song, so I played it for my wife. She said, “It sounds like rain.

Gear Used

For Rain, I used my Cordoba GK Studio, with a G7th Classical capo. The GK Studio guitar is dynamically a perfect instrument — without any of the intonation and tonal variances of standard classical guitars. The capo is a beautiful stainless steel capo, that allows you to apply just the right amount of pressure on the nylon strings.

Rain is relatively easy to play so long as you get used to the unrelenting fingerstyle technique — which is basically: thumb, 1st finger, 2nd finger — the entire song.

The guitar tab is beautifully written across three pages. My order of play looks like this, in accordance with the guitar tab: Intro, Verse 2x Chorus — Verse 2x, Chorus — Bridge, Chorus, End.
