Miss Lily Langtry

With the exception of The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino usually comprises his film scores with expertly curated and re-purposed tunes from past eras and films. Like Pulp Fiction, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a great stand-alone soundtrack that transports us to the Easy Rider Hollywood revolution of 1969.

The song, Miss Lily Langtry, is a cue from The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, starring Paul Newman. Being the only melodic instrumental in, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it was the obvious choice for this blog.

Initially I wasn’t turned on to the cue — however the more I listened to it — I became obsessed with the weirdness of the melody and chord changes. The only way you’d find a piece like this in 2019 is from a Johnny Greenwood score.

How to play Miss Lily Langtry | fingerstyle guitar

The guitar tab for this song is beautifully written across two pages. I recommend it for intermediate guitar players and up. You’ll play the guitar tab straight through without repeats.

I like pieces like this that act as lessons or etudes. It’s short enough to make it doable, but I forces you into some dynamic chord changing as you keep the tempo of the song.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Miss Lily Langtry is played two whole steps down. Your tuning from low to high is: C F Bb Eb G C. Or, depending on your tuner, it may look like this: C F A# D# G C.

As with all low tunings — it’s completely up to you. You can easily play this song in standard, or a whole step down, etc.
