Mindhunter

We just binged watched the first season of Mindhunter and it was great. If you liked (HBO’s) True Detective, you’ll like Mindhunter.

Mindhunter follows two FBI agents in the late 70’s as they attempt to create a profiling scheme for serial killers, by interviewing the incarcerated multiple-victim murderers.

Directed by David Fincher (Seven, The Social Network, Gone Girl) and produced by actress, Charlize Theron, Mindhunter is gritty and bleak — in classic David Fincher style.

The intro music, by composer, Jason Hill, music feels like a demented lullaby. It plays well to themes of the Netflix series — as the detectives uncover the mental abuse serial killers have apparently suffered from their own mothers. The Main Titles theme, like a mobile above a crib, soundtracks the genesis of these tormented individuals.

Gear Used

For Mindhunter, I used my Cordoba C7 mahogany, with a G7th classical capo. The Cordoba C7 is a deep and resonant guitar that’s not too expensive. The G7th capo is a stainless steel premium capo that allows you to pinch just the right amount of tightness against the string. You can find a list of my current gear here.

How to play the Mindhunter Main Titles theme for guitar

(Note: This is my premium material. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel, or click here to be updated on all of my latest guitar tabs.)

The actual Main Titles theme itself is pretty minimal, so I added some elements for guitar. I would still characterize this piece as easy to play.

The guitar tab for the Mindhunter Main Titles theme is only two pages long, and played straight through. You’ll take care to repeat the section |: between theĀ  repeatĀ  brackets :|.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Mindhunter is played in an E minor tuning. You can do one of two things here:

  • Tune your guitar (from low to high) to E B E G B E — then place a capo on the 1st fret.
  • Tune your guitar (from low to high) to D A D F A D — then place a capo on the 3rd fret.

I prefer the latter because I’m tuning strings down rather than up. Obviously, the guitar tab is written relative to the capo. The fret immediately following the capo is considered the 1st fret.
