Children of the New Dawn

I’ve been obsessing over Children of the New Dawn for months. Johannsson perfectly captured the generic sound of 1983 with a driving “Eye of the Tiger” note and the deliberately mono half-time drum kit. What a massive loss Johannsson was to film music; and music in general.

Additionally, I love the glorious abandon of Nicholas Cage’s persona. Mandy is a 2018 American action horror film directed and written by Panos Cosmatos which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The film stars Nicolas Cage and it is one of the last films scored by Icelandic composer, Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Mandy is set in the primal wilderness of 1983 where Red Miller, a broken and haunted man, hunts an unhinged religious sect who slaughtered the love of his life

How to play Children of the New Dawn | fingerstyle guitar

The basis of my arrangement, is the two note interval that I’m playing over and over, between the chord shapes, on the open 4th and 1st strings. To make the guitar tab sensible, I had to condense these down into repeated sections. I’ve indicated how many times to play this underneath the guitar tab. You’ll notice the intro intervals are played 16x.

Here’s how the guitar tab for Children of the New Dawn works out: Intro, Verse 3x – follow arrow on third time – To Chorus, Chorus 3x, Chorus Continued — Verse 2x – follow arrow on second time — To Chorus, Chorus 1x, Chorus Continued.

Within the intro and verse, you notice I wrote under the staff — 6x and 8x — at the verse endpoint. That’s because, as musicians, we think in terms of 6 and 8 — rather than counting a section 14 times.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:
