Lyudmilla Ignatenko is a central character in the bleak story of Chernobyl. Her personal journey embodies the entire battle:

[Bureaucratic ineptitude and a crumbling Soviet system ultimately generate a nuclear catastrophe. Hundreds of thousands of regular people are called to sacrifice their own health to stop the burning Reactor 4 from poisoning the world.]

I was in 3rd grade when the Chernobyl reactor exploded. I remember (even in the United States) being very distressed about this at the time. However, the event was soon eclipsed by the fall of the Soviet Union.

Only until I watched the HBO mini series, did I realize the unimaginable cost to human lives, and far reaching devastation to the environment.

In addition to the HBO mini-series, I recommend the documentary The Battle of Chernobyl on YouTube. It tracks well with the series. You can really see how the Soviets threw every resource they had at the reactor. According to Mikhail Gorbachev, the expenditure was so great, it caused the collapse of Soviet Union.

HBO also created a podcast for each of the five episodes.

Lyudmilla is a dedication to the unsung heroes involved in the aftermath of Chernobyl. Their efforts saved the world. This song is about the tribulation of that sacrifice.

How to play Lyudmilla by Evan Handyside

(Note: This is my premium material. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel, or click here to be updated on all of my latest guitar tabs.)

I originally set out to transcribe Vichnaya Pamyat an exquisite piece used towards the end of HBO’s Chernobyl. However, as I went through the piece, I accidentally developed my own song entitled Lyudmilla.

This guitar tab is beautifully written across four pages. I recommend Lyudmilla for intermediate guitar players but beginners can also give a try as the chord shapes are relatively easy to play.

The song is essentially one long passage that is played twice.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Lyudmilla – Evan Handyside (music inspired by HBO’s Chernobyl)

Lyudmilla is played one half step down (in the same key as Vichnaya Pamyat).

Your tuning is as follows, from low to high: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. Depending on your tuner, it may look like this: D# G# C# F# A# D#.
