This will be my final The Last Of Us post. I didn’t mean to spend half the summer transcribing one score, but (the game and soundtrack) were so popular, and I knew I could expedite the entire thing to this blog fairly quickly.

If you’re wondering how Gustavo Santaolalla arrived at his tuning for The Choice (and The Menu Theme), it’s important to realize that neither song is played on an actual guitar.

I listened to a recent interview (about The Last Of Us score) and Santaolalla explained that he’s actually using a mid-sixties guitar/bass called a Fender VI. It’s literally a guitar-bass; not a bass guitar. I didn’t even know these existed, and they’re very cool.

This also explains why I couldn’t get the super low notes in The Choice and The Menu Theme.

Although it’s not available on the score, the menu theme is a loose improvisation — played mostly with the Fender VI.  It has three sections of guitar parts that I assembled into one long piece.

Short of dropping $800 on a Fender VI, we’ll have to

This is just great. I absolutely love it. In my opinion, this is one of your best performances in a while.

I just kept listening to it over and over, simply for the way you played it. It really reminded me of the menu-theme from the “Babel” DVD, more in the way you played it, than the actual menu-theme as it is.

As you know I very much enjoy the wideness and openness, giving the notes space to breathe. I know it’s probably not the easiest or most profitable piece for a blog since you might lose a lot of listeners through these spaces.

It’s a pity really how silence and giving a note time to unfold has become so unpopular and ignored because we’re so used to something happening all the time, in music and visually. Well, I’m very glad you did it anyway!

I wonder, did you check out Dustin O’Halloran’s “The Beauty Inside” score? It’s short and sweet. The single songs on it are so short and catchy, I’m almost certain you would find something on there that would work perfectly as a single guitar arrangement. It’s also a really interesting listening experience, knowing his previous works.

    Thanks again for the tabs!

Thanks Daniel. This is one of the better things I’ve had the fortune of doing in a while. It’s going to appeal to a small group of people, but that ok. I know the exact part that reminded you of Babel; it reminded me too!

I just checked out The Beauty Inside score. I had no idea! They never advertise this stuff on the American iTunes! I’ll get to work on it straight away:)

I literally just checked your Last of Us tabs to see if you had tabbed the menu theme, and what perfect timing! So excited to learn this as well – probably one of my favourites pieces along with Home and The Choice (and the Main Theme… and the whole soundtrack pretty much). Gustavo’s music is just so emotive, but in a simple, beautiful way. Thankyou again so so much sharing all your tabs.

Thanks for commenting Chell! Interesting — that you picked up on that little bit of the song as your favorite. My favorite happens to be is the 2:23 onward, but I’m now seeing why you really dig that part at 0:27.

    Hi Evan,

    thank you for the tab!

I just started learning how to play the guitar, and was wondering –

what do you call that technique when 3 frets come together and have an upside down letter ‘U’ above them?

I’ve been trying to watch how you do it on youtube, but you’re too fast!

Hi Bernard, it depends on your goals and your age. I started out on a cheap Ibanez electric guitar — it worked perfectly!

Hi Deniz, thank you. I hope you enjoy your subscription! To answer your question, any tuning will work. Gustavo Santaolalla plays a 60’s style 6 string bass in this song, so any guitar will be sub optimal.
