Opening

If you’ve been a reading my blog for any length of time, it’s not hard to figure out that I’m a Gustavo Santaolalla superfan. It all started with the Brokeback Mountain score: acoustic guitar, empty space, minimalism. I had never heard anything like it.  Gustavo Santaolalla’s Brokeback Mountain captivates me to this day. It’s the way I want to play music, period.

Opening is literally the opening of the movie. It’s important to know that the iconic score of Brokeback Mountain was written before Ang Lee had even filmed the movie. Gustavo Santaolalla wrote his music from reading the script.

To verify that they were on the same page, Santaolalla recorded some simple acoustic guitar motifs and sent them along to Ang Lee. The initial rough motifs are what we hear in the film. Reportedly the music was played on set to cast a vibe for the cinematography.

How to play Opening, by Gustavo Santaolalla

Opening is very easy to play. You’ll play the guitar tab straight through, taking care to repeat the section within the repeat brackets twice.

For more legitimate guitar songs that happen to be fairly easy to play, check out my (aptly titled) Very Easy to Play archive. Lots of minimalist songs in there with the same vibe as Opening.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Opening is played in standard tuning.
