La Muerte De La Poderosa

I revisit The Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack often. The whole thing is a masterpiece. I love everything Gustavo Santaolalla does, but for me, the big two are: The Motorcycle Diaries and Brokeback Mountain.

Gustavo Santaolalla’s work on The Motorcycle Diaries embodies the word, “soundtrack”I view a (score) as more delicate entity (like Brokeback Mountain) coloring the film with music.

A soundtrack is more forceful, running in tandem with the characters. A soundtrack is part of the backdrop of a film. The Motorcycle Diaries is a soundtrack — in the truest sense of the word.

La Muerte De La Poderosa (The Death of the Mighty) is one of the lesser realized songs from, The Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. I’ve unintentionally ripped off the opening riff (in some form or another) a dozen times when writing my own songs.

With La Muerte De La Poderosa, I tried to weave the flute melody into Santaolalla’s guitar part. Incorporating the whistle part really makes it sound complete. In doing so — I used Gustavo Santaolalla’s own technique of quick trills and slides — so it sounds and plays like something he might actually do.

How to play La Muerte De La Poderosa by Gustavo Santaolalla

La Muerte De La Poderosa is fine for beginner guitar players, but better suited towards intermediate guitarists. There are no difficult chord positions — but it’s complex to play. It’s slow, but there’s a lot to play in a short time frame. Personally, I find this type of song to be the most satisfying to play.

The guitar tab is beautifully written across two pages, and played straight through. You’ll take care to repeat the intro section twice.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:
