Update 11/14/16: This is my all time favorite piece to play, and I’ve rewritten and updated the guitar tab for Brokeback Mountain Suite. The old guitar tab was sufficient, but I wanted to lay it out a little better. Please enjoy.

July 2012: Encuentro en el Estudio is a lot like Live From Abbey Road. Those who are familiar with both programs know that the performances they capture are often better than anything else the artist has done — live, studio, or otherwise.

Gustavo Santaolalla’s medley of his Oscar winning score for Brokeback Mountain (Secreto en la Montana) is no different.

Please check out my Gustavo Santaolalla archive for more guitar tabs from Santaolalla’s film scores. Additionally, I’ve done Snow, also from Brokeback Mountain.

How to play Brokeback Mountain Suite by Gustavo Santaolalla

Having never used the 3rd finger (of my right hand) before, I actually had to learn a new technique to play this piece. Santaolalla uses what I can only describe as a quadruplet — to arpeggiate — rather than strum the chords.

It’s an interesting technique as it allows the chord to be “voiced” slightly slower and more controlled than if you were to strum with your thumb. His right-hand technique is obvious from the video, and it definitely took me a few days to get the hang of it.

I’m still obsessing over this tab, and hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do. Don’t get frustrated with the finger picking technique. Take your time and you’ll get it within a few days. Enjoy friends, the tab is available below:
