Brokeback Mountain 2

The Brokeback Mountain score is initially what introduced me to Gustavo Santaolalla’s music in 2005 — for which he won the first of his back-to-back Academy Awards. The minimalist approach and solitary delivery of a lone acoustic guitar was unlike anything we had heard in film music before.

Within the score there are 3 beautiful passages of music entitled Brokeback Mountain 1, 2, & 3. Brokeback Mountain 1 is my favorite piece of music on earth and it informs all of my guitar playing and musicality. Having performed that already, I wanted to do justice to the motifs of Brokeback Mountain 2 (and eventually BBM 3).

For Brokeback Mountain 2, I’ve incorporated the the orchestration, and elongated the arrangement to create a more substantial guitar piece.

How to play Brokeback Mountain 2, by Gustavo Santaolalla

Brokeback Mountain 2 is relatively easy to play. There aren’t any truly difficult chord shapes, but the agility to jump in to the positions at speed might be tough for some beginner guitar players.

The guitar tab is two pages long and beautifully written. There is one long passage within repeat |: brackets :|. You’ll play that section twice, then follow through to the end.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below:

Brokeback Mountain 2 is played in standard tuning.
