game of thrones

Thankfully, my guitar student Danny figured out what song was actually played at the very end of Game of Thrones season 5. The song is entitled, Goodbye Brother — which is very fitting.

Goodbye Brother is considered to be a House Stark theme that marks the long slow demise of the well-respected Stark family — whom resided in Winterfell, and presided over the north of Westeros.

This song has been used throughout the Game of Thrones seasons — most poignantly at the end of Season 5.

Comprised mostly of sorrowful cellos, the music for Game of Thrones is spectacular. I don’t know of another series where the music is so popular in it’s own right.

Having done a few of the pieces now, my favorite is still, For the Realm. It’s pretty advanced, but the most fun by far. Please take advantage, as it’s a free tab. You can find all of my Game of Thrones arrangements here.

How to play Goodbye Brother for classical guitar

For Goodbye Brother, I tried to envision what Gustavo Santaolalla might play, if he were lending a guitar part to the orchestral version of the song. The end result is a dark, and brooding guitar piece that sounds like it belongs in The Last Of Us as well as Game of Thrones.

As usual, I’m not trying to crush you with the technicality of the guitar piece. I kept the arrangement of Goodbye Brother as simple as possible.

The guitar tab is two pages long, beautifully written, and played straight through — without repeats. I love this one, and I hope you to too.

The guitar tab is available below:

Goodbye Brother is tuned one whole step down. Your tuning is as follows, from low to high: D G C F A D. Enjoy!
