Gustavo Santaolalla[Updated for 2017]

Things We Lost in the Fire, is a 2007 drama starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro:

A recent widow (Berry) invites her husband's troubled best friend (Del Toro) to live with her and her two children. As he gradually turns his life around, he inadvertently helps the family cope and confront their loss.

Great acting by both Berry and Del Toro.

Gustavo Santaolalla's score for 'Things We Lost in the Fire' is a little know gem. The main theme in the movie is a pretty melody played first (on the ronroco) in Opening Montage and secondly in Funeral Dinner (on the guitar). In classic Santaolalla style, he uses very sparse guitar playing -- almost using rest periods as an additional instrument.

A piece like this really underscores that minimalism is the only way to express sentiment with music. We should all strive to play less notes. Please browse my Gustavo Santaolalla archive for (60+) simple and beautiful guitar melodies like this one.
