[Forgive the unsightly gash on the top of my head in the beginning of the video. I have a two-year-old boy, which means at any time my noggin can be pelted with flying blocks. No hair to conceal it!]

My friend Micah Albert inadvertently turned me onto Whitestone Pictures a few weeks ago. He sent me a playlist of songs to check out for the blog.

[Micah Albert is a world-class documentary photographer — and all around swell guy. His Instagram is da bomb diggity.]

On the playlist was Belief, by Nicholas Kirk, from Whitestone’s Jack and the Dustbowl. The song was so incredible, that I was compelled to watch the 20 minute movie. Now I’m hooked on Whitestone Motion Pictures. If you’ve never heard of them, check it:

Whitestone Motion Pictures are a boutique, in-house, production company in North Carolina. Their goal is to reclaim storytelling, and myth making with expert craftsmanship.

Each of their passion-project films are roughly 20 minutes, and they have look and feel of a much larger budget film. You can watch them for free on Vimeo.

Think of the back to basics songwriting and craftsmanship of: Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, or the Avett Brothers. If all three of them combined to make a motion picture production company — it would be Whitestone Pictures. That’s an oversimplification, and probably wildly inaccurate — but that’s how I like to think about it.

In-house producer and composer, Nicholas Kirk, could easily be an A-list composer. His song, Belief (from Jack and the Dustbowl) is beautiful, and perfectly fits the film’s narrative. From Whitestone’s website:

Jack Spriggs, a poor dust bowl farmer from Alabama, is determined to keep his family’s land.

Set during the Great Depression, record heat waves and over-farming have turned the once fertile soil into worthless dust. Refusing to become a victim of his circumstances, Jack embraces his surroundings and digs in.

Jack’s tenacious spirit and ingenuity will either keep his family together or cause him to lose everything.

Above all, I like Whitestone’s egalitarian spirit. I’m a do-it-yourself kind of guy and Whitestone delivers beautiful looking films with a sense of mission in their storytelling. And, they do it with the talents of a small group of dedicated people.

Watch Jack and the Dustbowl here.

I particularly identified with this movie because “belief” sometimes requires a semi-delusion in one’s talent and capacity. Though their best intentions are in mind, it’s usually your loved ones who say you shouldn’t, or can’t do something

Perseverance is tough, especially in the face of multiple failures. I’ve been there. I live there.

Other people’s success usually seems like a quick, obvious, and foregone conclusion. What we don’t see is the previous 10,000 hours of pure grind.

How to play Belief by Nicholas Kirk

Belief is easy to play, as there are no difficult chords shapes. This song is a great opportunity to play gracefully: to gently flow up and down the neck.

The guitar tab for Belief is two pages long, and beautifully written. My order of play looks like this: Intro, Verse 1, Chorus — Verse 2, Chorus, End.

Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below.
