Epilogue

It’s funny that an Epilogue is a conclusion because it was my very first blog post in 2011. Intellimusica was a weird idea then, and I’ve winged it ever since. This is a full redo of that initial post.

Gustavo Santaolalla’s music is where it all started for me. I became a huge fan of his iconic Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. At the time, no one was playing his music on YouTube or anywhere else. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful was just released in December 2010, so I decided that my first post would be Epilogue. 

At the time, my thought process was: I like obscure Gustavo Santaolalla film score stuff. I imagine his fans are highly sophisticated in their musicality. Intelligent > Intelligentsia > Intellimusica. And that’s how I got the name for my blog.

Truth be told, I was very uncomfortable having any presence online. I didn’t have any social media at the time, and I was generally uneasy with anybody knowing anything about me. I didn’t want name anywhere.

My decade long rock band had disbanded. I had spent my 20’s into early 30’s teaching guitar — which was the only job that would facilitate being in touring band. By the age of 34, I was way behind my peers professionally. My friends all had kids, and were getting on with their careers. I never even went to college.

I was a 34 year-old guitar teacher. I thought that was ridiculous, and I was embarrassed.

However, this blog quickly became my true calling — acting as a lighthouse for like-minded guitar players. Folks actually enjoyed what I was playing on YouTube, and guitarists were using my guitar tabs. The success of Intellimusica had the unintended effect of bolstering my physical teaching job too. I realized I could do this for the rest of my life. Being a guitar teacher wasn’t so ridiculous after all.

How to play Epilogue by Gustavo Santaolalla

The guitar tab for Epilogue is beautiful written across 3 pages. I recommend this piece for intermediate guitar players and up. The 1st chord is a real humdinger. You’ll have to drop your arm (and your thumb) low behind the neck to get into position. Beyond that first (and repeated) Em 11 chord, the rest is fairly easy to play.

The tuning for this piece is a ‘Drop-D’ tuning. From low to high: D A D G B E. There is no capo.

For recording/performance purposes, I needed to make Em 11 stretch easier and get my hand closer to my body. My Cordoba C7 guitar is tuned one whole step down (and drop C) so simply putting a capo on the 2nd fret brings the guitar to D A D G B E.
