I’m very excited to see Arrival — but with a 19 month-old at home, my movie watching has taken a serious hit. Even still, I’ve been a huge Denis Villeneuve fan ever since his movie Prisoners, which is also scored by Jóhann Jóhannsson.
Principally, Jóhann Jóhannsson is a post classical composer with the likes of Dustin O’Halloran and Max Richter. He specializes in drone, ambient and experimental music.
His scores for Sicario (also Denis Villeneuve) and The Theory of Everything were nominated for Academy Awards.
Please watch this short behind-the-scenes video of Jóhann Jóhannsson scoring Arrival. The use and layering of vocalists is pure genius.
[The opening and closing theme of Arrival is On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter.]
How to play Kangaru for classical guitar
For Kangaru, I’m using a Sadowsky Electric Nylon string guitar. I’m not sure that this guitar is even made anymore — and I’m betting this one is 20 years old. Despite my avant-garde guitar, any guitar will due for playing Kangaru.
Kangaru is tuned in an open D tuning. Your tuning is as follows, from low to high: D A D F# A D. Or, depending on your tuner: D A D Gb A D. I then place a capo on the 1st fret.
The guitar tab is written with the actual frets, rather than the frets relative to the capo (which is customary). I wrote the actual frets because Kangaru is played high up on the fretboard away from the capo.
Kangaru is very easy to play. Enjoy, the guitar tab is available below.
